Dr. Ries and the Virtual Classroom

At this point in time, what are your concerns (if any) about the online learning format that we are presently using?   What concerns do you have with regard to your students and their mastery of the curriculum?   Additionally, what are your thoughts with regard to your ability to cover the curriculum?    Do you see any advantages to online learning that you might wish to incorporate into your regular classroom structure once we return to our classrooms?  Any new programs that you wish to share with the group?

Any funny stories to share with regard to your students and online learning?

How are we keeping ourselves "sane and happy" during this difficult time?  Let us hear.

  1. There are definitely some positives and negatives to my current online teaching situation. First, as a math teacher my lessons tend to be cumulative and with the currently 48-hour window given to students for completing assignments, I find if difficult to build up the rigor of a topic or skill. I do understand the need to provide flexibility and understanding to our students, however, I do not think this strategy is benefiting the instruction and may do more harm than good. I don't see the additional time for students to do work as truly helping them. I think the increase in time for completion has undermined their organization.

I have learned to use several online resources and will definitely look to implement more of these when I return to the classroom. I especially like EdPuzzle right now.

Another tough spot for me is that I find it tough to truly collaborate with my fellow 7th grade math teachers. In school, we talk daily about our lessons, materials and assessments and with working from home, this has really been a challenge.

  2. In my teaching online, I didn’t have any serious situations till now, except that the work has increased for me, and that after working hard, I receive the order to give 90 to all students as a final grade for the third marking period, and 95 to those who did work. They made me grade each students’ work, fill the Google drive grid with those grades, and then asked me to fill the power teacher grid with the score they decided.
Something that I have noticed is that some students who did not work very well in class are doing better job on the online teaching.
I have learned to use different online resources too such as FlipGrid, Google classroom, Zoon, etc.
